Höyrytys Oy has delivered an electric steam boiler to Stora Enso’s Anjalankoski Mills. The electric boiler secures steam production at the Anjalankoski Mills alongside its existing bio- and gas-powered boilers. 

The project included the installation and commissioning of a 60 MW Zander & Ingeström electric steam boiler. In addition, the delivery included auxiliary equipment and spare parts for the boiler plant. Höyrytys partner Zander & Ingeström was responsible for the boiler unit, including installations, and participated in the commissioning of the boiler. Several other actors were also involved in the project and implementation. 

Essi Melanen, Project Manager at Höyrytys, believes that the company’s experience and expertise played a vital role in the bidding phase. 

“We were able to offer the plant desired by Stora Enso, one that could be flexibly integrated with its existing systems. In addition, we were able to share our expertise and give answers, especially regarding electric boilers and related water treatment.” 

Electric boiler enables cleaner energy 

The electric boiler was chosen as part of the Stora Enso mill’s flexible heat production, so that heat can be produced as competitively as possible. 

“An electric steam boiler enables us to use cleaner energy and reduce emissions, which supports Stora Enso’s sustainability goals,” says Ari Pöntinen, Production Manager, Fiber and Energy, Stora Enso. 

The electric boiler already plays a significant role in Stora Enso’s steam production. 

“By using the boiler flexibly on the terms of the electricity market, we can replace other more expensive fuel fractions,” Pöntinen explains. 

Growing demand for electric steam boilers 

Interest in electric steam boilers in particular has grown in recent years, and Höyrytys has implemented several similar projects for its customers. 

“The electric boiler delivered to Stora Enso was so far the largest of the boilers delivered by Höyrytys. We have worked with the customer in the past supplying backup energy to the company’s various mills, for example during steam outages due to factory maintenance shutdowns,” says Essi Melanen. 

The electric boiler project was delivered to Stora Enso in spring 2024.
