DS Smith outsources operational monitoring to Höyrytys for a reliable and carefree solution

/  Höyrytys

Höyrytys offers a wide range of versatile maintenance and operational monitoring services that can be tailored to the specific needs of individual customers. DS Smith, which manufactures corrugated cardboard at its plant in Tampere, has completely outsourced the statutory operational monitoring of its 7.2 MW steam boiler plant to Höyrytys, whose qualified experts visit the site several times a week. The agreement also covers 24/7 on-call service, gas usage monitoring, backup usage monitoring, necessary modifications and repairs, and a backup energy service. The two companies have enjoyed smooth cooperation for several years already.

The extensive maintenance and operational monitoring agreement was reached as a result of the positive experiences gained by DS Smith when Höyrytys was originally commissioned to maintain the steam boiler at the company’s Tampere plant.

“After our own maintenance manager retired and we were left without the necessary expertise, we decided to transfer operational monitoring to Höyrytys. It is a sure solution for us,” says Mikko Sorri, Purchaser at DS Smith.

DS Smith is a leading global provider of sustainable packaging solutions, paper products, and recycling services. At its plant in Tampere, steam is used in the manufacturing process for corrugated cardboard.

Periodic operational monitoring three times a week

Höyrytys maintains and monitors the operation of DS Smith’s boiler plant according to the operating model of periodic operational monitoring. This means that there is an on-site monitoring visit at least three times a week. The time between visits must always be less than 84 hours. According to the guidelines of the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), periodical operational monitoring requires that the boiler has the necessary secured safety systems. Periodic operational monitoring is generally suitable for small gas or oil-powered plants.

Sorri points out that running a continuous monitoring and on-call system would not be possible with just one employee. If DS Smith had to handle the work itself, it would require several experts trained for the task, as well as constant and precise coordination of work shifts and vacations. When operational monitoring and maintenance are outsourced to Höyrytys, who knows the equipment well, DS Smith can focus on its own core business and trust that the plant is working and steam is constantly available.

24/7 on-call service and backup energy ensure production

According to Sorri, the 24/7 on-call service included in the maintenance and operational control agreement is vital for plant operations. As an example of how quickly Höyrytys responds, he tells about a situation caused by a disturbance in the electricity grid. The steam operator on duty was able to give the most important instructions for resolving the problem over the phone while driving to the plant.

Within the framework of the agreement, Höyrytys also handles scheduled tasks, such as maintenance and repairs during the the summer maintenance break.
