Höyrytys backup energy service ensures security of supply for Keravan Energia
Keravan Energia has signed a backup energy agreement with Höyrytys Oy. Höyrytys will secure the production of backup heat and steam for Kerava Energia on a 24/7 basis, so that mobile backup energy equipment can be called to the site with a single phone call and connected to Keravan Energia’s sites to produce backup energy within the agreed response time.
The agreement covers almost all of Keravan Energia’s heat and steam systems with a capacity of 10 MW. The backup energy service can be used, for example, to respond to situations where the availability of gas decreases during winter frosts. According to Heikki Hapuli, Production Director at Keravan Energia, the main purpose of the backup energy agreement is to secure security of supply, i.e. to prepare for disruptions. In addition, the possibility of using backup energy also offers flexibility, for example in connection with maintenance work.
Previously, Keravan Energia has managed its peak and backup energy needs itself using gas and oil. Since the company no longer wants to invest in the maintenance of oil logistics, the backup energy service offered by Höyrytys turned out to be the best solution. With the agreement, Keravan Energia can reduce the purchase of oil and also cope with situations where the availability of gas is temporarily limited.
The cooperation between Keravan Energia and Höyrytys demonstrates the power of having a local presence. Even when the agreement was being prepared, it was easy for the team at Keravan Energia to stop by their neighbour’s to familiarise themselves with the backup energy equipment.
“It’s a benefit that the other party is always nearby and easy to contact. It gives our cooperation a face, making it easier for us to communicate our expectations and hear what Höyrytys can offer,” Heikki Hapuli summarises.
In addition to Keravan Energia, Höyrytys backup energy equipment serves numerous companies and facilities around Finland.
“In this kind of sharing economy, it is not necessary for everyone to purchase their own equipment. If, thanks to the agreement, the energy utility company no longer has to maintain its own fossil fuel equipment base, it is a step in a greener direction and frees up resources for more sustainable production solutions,” adds Aarni Natunen, Production Manager at Höyrytys.
